I saw Date Night

It's adorable. Tina Fey and Steve Carell are all kinds of awesome as you might expect.

I HATE that I like the song "Burn It to the Ground." It's Nickelback... ughhhhh.

So let me get this straight, Greg (can I call you Greg?). You want The Office... and a spinoff of The Office... and a totally new show that has nothing to do with The Office but is by the same production team and is similar "in spirit" or something? I'm confused, and I don't think this is a very good idea...

however, though I wasn't around then, I can't imagine people were too thrilled, in, I dunno, late 2004/early 2005 when you were like "hey!!! we're remaking the unbelievably venerated British Office!!! with this random guy from The Daily Show*, this other guy from the blockbuster House of 1000 Corpses, the guy who didn't know what oral sex was in Kinsey, and some ginger chick who you've never heard of!!!!" We'll see.

* Steve Carell also stole the show in Anchorman and Bruce Almighty, but nobody really remembered him until 4oYOV hit it big. And, for that at least, I'll always be grateful to that awful movie.

Speaking of Monday’s (July 7) premiere, Carell came to his costars aide while on the red carpet. A reporter asked Hathaway about her ex Raffaello Follieri, the reporter said, “Was the separation from your ex-boyfriend painful?”

While Hathaway remained silent, Carell jumped in and said “In my role of agent (for) Miss Hathaway, I would like to say that she does not answer questions relating to this subject.”

But perhaps, an even bigger congratulations to Steve Carell, for changing his episode from "Branch Wars" to "Goodbye, Toby" (maybe he read this blog ;) ). I think Baldwin's still going to win this one, but at least it's a fight now.

On said Saturday Night Live repeat, it turns out Steve Carell is hosting, and it's right before the S2 premiere of The Office in summer 2005. And he just made a joke about how they were going to cancel it because nobody was watching! Ohhhh, so funny. He's funny.

ETA: The episode also references beet salad and people checking their hotel rooms with blacklights for sketchy stains. Yay!

Today in really fuckin' obvious things,

Steve Carell has a weird nose. It's also huge. Seriously, every time I see him in profile - and I do, like, a lot (you might have heard I'm a fan of this TV show he's in) - I'm a little shocked anew.

*cries*

Alec Baldwin "Tired" of Acting, Scrutiny. I am not even kidding when I say Alec Baldwin is one of my favorite actors, post-2003, and all it took was some brilliant screaming of "Patriot Act!"

Oh well. At least if he leaves 30 Rock, the show will inevitably end and maybe Steve Carell can win an Emmy someday, right...?

Why did you just call Anne Hathaway "a tremendous actress." That hurts my heart. Oh, and with all the advertising, I feel like I'VE SEEN THIS ENTIRE MOVIE ALREADY.

But despite the snotty kiss, Hathaway was thrilled to get the chance to make out with one of her favourite funnymen.She adds, "Making out with him is like the yummiest lollipop, dipped in sunshine and wrapped in a masculine wrapper! That's the only way I can think to describe it."

There is no explanation for this. Except maybe NBC told Steve to take the fall for Alec, especially considering Baldwin The Awesomest submitted a perfect tape ("Rosemary's Baby") (that thing about taking a fall is a joke, seriously). Steve's great in this episode, I mean, it's Steve, but when they had stuff like "Money" or "Goodbye, Toby" or "The Deposition" and they submit "Branch Wars"?! Dumb.......... it might be the "weakest" episode for them to submit. Can they change it once he gets nominated (since he's a lock no matter what, because this is the Emmys?)?

Ricky Gervais! Japanese Office! DAWESOME. Okay, some of the other skits were lame, but... Japanese Office!!!! Oh, and the part where they were dancing in the conference room reminded me of Lost in Translation and I was just tickled pink. Ahhh wonderful.

Overall analysis: Mindy has two episodes that are absolutely obsession-worthy, including my all-time favorite, a few that are very solid, and then a couple that are among the weaker episodes of the series. Along these lines, I gotta say that I think if "The Injury" was an episode today, it would be viciously attacked. It's too over-the-top! They leave the office! It's too over-the-top! The characters aren't right! Michael is too stupid! There isn't enough JAM! Waaahh physical comedy! It's too over-the-top! That's not an insult of "The Injury," which is effing amazing, but an insult of the ridiculous critiques of S4.

Overall analysis: Excellent writer, maybe the most consistently excellent they have. His episodes are either fantastic or very good. He gets even more bonus points because "Diversity Day" was the second episode ever, and it came after the Pilot, which was basically just the British Office Pilot rewritten, so it must have been really difficult to write that. Secretly, I'd like to see his high school classmate write some episodes, though...
More Bonus Points: If you've ever been to his MySpace, you know his favorite movies. They are Adaptation., The King of Comedy, The Apartment, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Taxi Driver, Chungking Express, Casablanca, Divorce - Italian Style, Pulp Fiction, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, No Country for Old Men, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and The Naked Gun. Save The Naked Gun, which honestly, I've never seen, that's an effing amazing list. They're all great, and not even like, great-but-overrated great.

Overall analysis: Hmm. Well, Lieberstein wrote a few episodes that aren't that great, including one of only three "weak" episodes in the series, but his writing actually seems to be getting better. His latest two episodes, "Money" and "The Job," are two of the series' best. And of course, I'm totally expecting "Goodbye, Toby" to be the best episode of his of all. ;)

Overall analysis: Damn good writer. I was looking at the list of episodes he wrote, and I was like, damn, he wrote that one? And that one? None of his episodes are in my top 10, but save "The Alliance," which is still good (and which I think I'm underrating - most of S1 deserves a rewatch from me), and "Valentine's Day," which is, again, still good, they're all excellent.

Overall analysis: Hard to say. He's only written two (though one of them is, likely, if you polled all the Office fans across the world, the #1 episode. Yeah, it's probably for JAMmy reasons, but the episode is wonderful even without that storyline. As is, it's the best chocolate frosting in the world on an unbelievably delicious cake. yay, confused metaphors!). I love them both, though.
