How did I not read about this before? Like I've said before, since 1999 and (not totally coincidentally, I think) his second Oscar, his career hasn't really been the greatest, but... I don't care. His 1990s work alone deserves him a place in the pantheon. He was like Pacino or Nicholson in the 70s (I fuckin' said it, deal with it). Even now, there is the occasional hint at what he was before - The Life of David Gale, Superman Returns... I kept waiting for his big comeback. And now, I guess, it's not gonna come. I'll always support theater and people doing what they feel is necessary, but I'm gonna miss Lester Burnham, Kevin.

And we thought the Oscars were bad

I watched the MTV Movie Awards. Ugh, I know. Sarah Silverman isn't funny at all. I hate Paris Hilton, but if she made that joke about anyone else, I'd be going "ugh, SHUT UP, you unfunny, full-of-yourself hack." Pirates of the Carribbean: Dead Man's Chest won Best Picture and Johnny Depp's performance in that won Best Performance, please excuse me while I throw up. All the movie parodies were totally awful. And, finally, what the fuck was Jack Nicholson on? Goddamn. I think, at 20, I'm too old for MTV. Or...too mature.

That said, uh, the musical performances were actually really good (UMBRELLA ELLA ELLA ELLA AY AY AY!), though Amy Winehouse's legs are so skinny it actually frightens me. Oh and Emily Blunt didn't win either of her nominations, YAY!!!

Jack Nicholson rocks. Please watch The Departed again in honor of this, or One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, for which he totally deservedly won the Oscar (Al Pacino in Dog Day Afternoon is fantastic but not in his league, frankly). I'm shocked he's still alive. Here's to another 70 years!

It was a pretty darn good year. Unfortunately, every single category at the Oscars, be it Best Picture, Best Art Direction, or Best Documentary Short, had the unfortunate effect of nominating Chicago, The Pianist, Gangs of New York, The Hours, and Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers. Zzz... Ranking those:

5. Gangs of New York (C+...Scorsese's worst? Still a terribly fascinating mess.)
And I just realized 25th Hour was completely snubbed. EW. That's way worse than Julianne Moore not winning the Oscar...
