Happy birthday, Melora Hardin!

Though I'm now totally about Micholly or whatever their couple name is, I'm so psyched for some more "Jansanity," as I read in someone's post over on OfficeTally, in Season 5. Melora is gorgeous, totally talented, and has captured, amazingly well, every varied swerve of Jan's personality from Day 1. She submitted "Dinner Party" for her Emmy tape, and if the voters actually watch the tapes instead of just voting by name, she should be richly awarded with a nomination. Happy birthday, Melora! June is a great month for Office birthdays. :)

For my money, she should be winning Best Supporting Actress - Comedy Series (or whatever it's called) at the Emmys this year. The amount of depth she brought to Angela, while stealing every freaking scene she was in with her hilarity, was just the kind of stuff awards were made for (but unfortunately never recognize). I hope she's spending a wonderful day with the surely lovely baby Isabel!

She's quite possibly the best female director in history, even with only three films under her belt. Lost in Translation is still my all-time favorite movie, and it's just full of her own gorgeous (yes, I suppose stereotypically "feminine") sensibility that adds to, not detracts from, the film. It's perfect in every way. Plus, I want to hang out with her and meet her dad and steal her CD collection and all that.

Michelle Pfeiffer, Daniel Day-Lewis, Uma Thurman.

Love DDL, especially after 2007. Uma Thurman is one of my favorite actresses when she's not being terrible, which is sadly not all that often lately. Still, all she really needs is Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction and she's already got two performances most people would die for. Don't care for Michelle Pfeiffer, the praise she gets for Batman Returns still utterly baffles me. She was okay as the cat in full regalia, not anything special but not bad, but she was horrendous as the secretary. Granted, that part of the movie didn't last terribly long, but it still left a sour taste. Recently, people (not a lot, but they're out there) have been giving her noms for Hairspray. WTF?

It's Jack Nicholson's birthday.

Bette Davis. Bette Davis. Bette Davis.

Bette Davis is, decidedly, in my top ten actresses of all time. I adore her like I adore Laura Linney, like I adore Kate Winslet, like I adore Meryl Streep. She had beyond charisma, but also the skills to boot. In one of my classes last year, we read The Little Foxes. It's a pretty dull play. Then, however, we watched the movie, and damn. In every imaginable way, Bette brought it to life - with nuance, passion, fire, and, again, that darn charisma (that's also the class that introduced me to Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, but that's another story for another time...). And the thing is - it's far from her best performance! I haven't seen nearly all her work, but I still love her.

I love how her IMDb bio says she was credited at times as "Miss Bette Davis," and I fully agree with this name. She should be called that. She was far from beautiful, but she gives me hope because she proves that women with real talent and spark can actually make it in the crazy film business. Happy birthday, Bette.

Robert Downey Jr., who I adore - he is absolutely one of my favorite actors. I still think the Iron Man trailer is kind of terrible, but I'll be there to cheer him on for certain; I'm thrilled he is clean and bankable again. Plus, he does look awesome in it, as he is awesome in everything, including the worst kind of crap (cough, Natural Born Killers, cough). Go watch that "I Want Love" music video again (full disclaimer: I can never watch it more than once, because his face is just too painful in it. I know it's a music video, but that's still an incredible performance) to celebrate.

I know that nowadays, play a real character = win an Oscar, but Reese actually deserved it. She alone gave life to a dull movie (Joaquin was okay, but not nearly as good as she was). Just reminding ya'll in honor of her birthday.

It is God's birthday today. I know I probably say a lot of people are "God" in this blog (I feel God in this blog tonight. WHOOOO!!!!!), but I really mean it with him. He is probably the most talented living artist. In honor of him, contemplate how much better Sweeney Todd, the stage show, is from Sweeney Todd, the movie (which is still not bad, probably just because I love that show so goddamn much).

Also: Reese Witherspoon (still love her.). Andrew Lloyd Webber (I don't have the pure hatred for him a lot of musical theater people do, but yeah his shows are pretty bad and his music very schlocky. And why is he on the IMDb main page for birthdays and not Sondheim? Sondheim's got an Oscar too, bitches!). Damn Karl Malden is 96?!
