looking back at my year-in-advance Oscar picks

So, I Was Wrong.:

- James McAvoy, Becoming Jane (he'll probably get in for Atonement... at least, that's what it looks like at this point)

- Jane Fonda, Georgia Rule (lololololol)

I actually saw 3 movies this weekend.

Evening is...ewww. It's basically a Lifetime movie, with about the same level of technical achievement and acting. Seriously, you look at the cast, and then...the only person who's really good (and even then, not like she's Oscar-worthy) is Meryl, who is in it for about five minutes. The movie made me hate Toni Collette, for chrissakes! I'm hardly the biggest fan of The Hours but compared to Evening, the former is a masterpiece in its transitions between the years and whatnot. Yikes. D

Once is good but not half as good as I was hearing. It's Lost in Translation without the amazing acting, on a $17 budget. Oh my God the camera was so fucking annoying. It's a totally sweet story, though, and the music is actually great. B-/B

Ratatouille is an animated masterpiece. Cars wasn't great, and I think The Incredibles is extremely overrated, but this is a return to form after Pixar's mini-"slump." LOVE IT. A

GREAT line

"Vanessa Redgrave spends most of Evening dying, and so does Evening." -I think it was the New York Post? Anyway. I know it's gonna suck hard and I guess Glenn ain't gettin' nominated, but I'm still pretty excited to see The Hours: Part II, if only to giggle over how melodramatic it surely will be.

Evening and other assorted thoughts

I'm pretty sure Evening is gonna suck (yet hopefully, I'll still see it this weekend). I mean...movies with that good a cast don't get dumped in July for no reason.

Also, I actually posted on IMDb, for the first time ever. Some post was talking about how there are no good female villain roles and someone was like "but Michelle Pfeiffer is playing two this year alone! OMG she is amazing!!!!" I couldn't help but be like "Velma Von Tussle isn't exactly Lady Macbeth." Here's to many more posts mocking idiot IMDbers!

I'm confused by Hairspray's reception, though. Everyone seems all psyched to love it ahead of time. It's a little like Dreamgirls (only in reverse)... Dreamgirls could have been the best movie ever made and you know there are still people who would hate it.
