rewatching Dreamgirls...
I really like it, okay, so suck it. No, it's not Chicago, but neither is it Rent. Jennifer Hudson makes me want to cry with how fugging awesome she is. But, Jamie. Oh, Jamie. As you see, your poster here says "steppin' to the bad side." It was...it was referring to your acting in this movie, right? Because JESUS CHRIST YOU ARE AWFUL.

OMG!
So Hairspray may have started out the year as one of my least anticipated movies, but once again I shall admit defeat. It's totally fun. I think a lot of that fun, however, comes from the source material; the set designers really could have used more flash, glitter, and SHINY NEON COLORS!!!!! (yeah, I know, most of it took place in '60s Baltimore, but even the set of the Corny Collins Show was rather dull), and the movie could have been more campy overall. Still, it's just so much fun (how many times have I said "fun" here) that you're willing to overlook its flaws. The movie is definitely more than worth your time, and it's just nice to see a musical that's just willing to revel in itself, instead of desperately clutching for Oscars (I liked Dreamgirls a lot and all, but...). B+

Evening and other assorted thoughts
I'm pretty sure Evening is gonna suck (yet hopefully, I'll still see it this weekend). I mean...movies with that good a cast don't get dumped in July for no reason.
Also, I actually posted on IMDb, for the first time ever. Some post was talking about how there are no good female villain roles and someone was like "but Michelle Pfeiffer is playing two this year alone! OMG she is amazing!!!!" I couldn't help but be like "Velma Von Tussle isn't exactly Lady Macbeth." Here's to many more posts mocking idiot IMDbers!
I'm confused by Hairspray's reception, though. Everyone seems all psyched to love it ahead of time. It's a little like Dreamgirls (only in reverse)... Dreamgirls could have been the best movie ever made and you know there are still people who would hate it.

for obvious reasons, he's not very happy...why are Alec Baldwin and Eddie Murphy listed before Marlon Brando on IMDb's birthdays today? I'm practically offended. Baldwin and Murphy are, you know, fine and all, but Marlon Brando is only the best actor that ever lived. That said, all three can be brilliant. Revisit two of the best movies of 2006, The Departed and Dreamgirls, to revisit two of the best performances of 2006 (Baldwin's and Murphy's), and then watch any number of Brando's brilliant performances. Last Tango in Paris (probably the best performance I've ever seen in my life), A Streetcar Named Desire, On the Waterfront, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, The Wild One, Viva Zapata!...

My rank among the nominees: 4th
How'd he get nominated?: He's got a good role (drug addict! cursin' grandpa!) in an Oscar-supported film.
Pros: A very respected actor who never won an Oscar. AMPAS may go Little Miss Sunshine-crazy.
Cons: Not the frontrunner. I'm still not exactly sure what the hell made him better than Carell or Kinnear, and my guess is many others aren't either. No precursor awards.
Basically, any chance of winning?: Yes, but it's ridiculous that people are predicting him now just because he won the BAFTA. Jake Gyllenhaal won the BAFTA last year when he was clearly the best in his category, and he still couldn't win at the Oscars.
Analyzing: Jackie Earle Haley, Little Children
My rank among the nominees: 2nd
How'd he get nominated: Critical approval + Kate Winslet's pre-ordained place in the Best Actress race
Pros: Comeback kid. The fact that he could get nominated for this role (and virtually unseen movie) alone is telling. Critical raves. Critics awards.
Cons: Not the frontrunner at all - many weren't even sure if he'd get in. Movie is tiny. Role is (really) unsympathetic.

Cons: Performance often dismissed as just "running and screaming" (it's not, but it's the least of the nominees anyway). Most didn't think he was going to even be nominated.
Basically, any chance of winning?: Again, only if there's some crazy vote splitting.

How'd he get nominated: Comeback kid in a flashy, scene-stealing role in a Best Picture frontrunner (well, we all thought it was, anyway.)!
Pros: See "how'd he get nominated." Scene-stealing = shades of Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago. Relatively baity role (drug addict!). Globe, SAG, and critics awards.
Cons: Backlash - both against him and Dreamgirls in general. Norbit...though it made an assload of money so it wasn't really an embarassment.
Basically, any chance of winning?: Yup. A big one, too.
Analyzing: Mark Wahlberg, The Departed
My rank among the nominees: 3rd
How'd he get nominated: "Maybe. Maybe not. Maybe fuck yourself."
Pros: Support for The Departed. That dialogue! Comeback kid, sorta.
Cons: Um, there's no way he was the best performance in The Departed. He was a surprise nominee - most of these don't win. Still the perception of him as "Marky Mark."
Basically, any chance of winning?: If there's vote splitting between Arkin and Murphy, he's the most likely to benefit (more than Hounsou or Haley). However, it's not all that likely...but it is likely. I guess.
Analyzing: Best Supporting Actor as a whole
Who will win: I'm predicting Eddie Murphy, but Alan Arkin could get this too. And a lot of people are predicting Mark Wahlberg as well, but I just don't see it...
Who should win: For me, Eddie is the true standout in this category.

Snubbed: With such an up-in-the-air category, I'm kinda ticked by the fact that boring performances like Arkin and Hounsou got in here. I would have preferred, out of anyone with any hype at all, Sheen in The Queen, Carell in Little Miss Sunshine (the best member of the cast is the only one without any sort of awards nomination? ridiculous), Affleck in Hollywoodland, the aforementioned Nicholson, and even the poor neglected Baldwin in the same movie. Among those with no chance, I enjoyed Caine in both his outings this year (Children of Men and The Prestige), Doug Jones and Sergio Lopez in Pan's Labyrinth, and Robert Downey Jr. in A Scanner Darkly. But, of course, my heart belongs to Clive Owen in Inside Man.

BAFTA craziness
Dear BAFTAs,
Grrr. You gave The Queen Best Picture (it was predictable though) and Best Director to anyone that is not Marty (okay, so did I, but Aronofsky never had a chance in awards circles...and yes, Greengrass did a great job). Your screenplay wins confuse me and you gave Alan Arkin the freaking award?!
Still, I will let you live. You gave Children of Men Best Cinematography and Art Direction, which it certainly deserves. J-Hud got Best Supporting Actress from you. And, most importantly, despite two nominations, you didn't give Emily Blunt anything. Thanks!

wouldn't it be a lovely headline: "life is beautiful"
as you see from my "about me," i am too scared to post on others' blogs. there are a great number of reasons for this, but it basically all boils down to: i rarely agree with consensus, and i have no idea how to really defend myself. i thought brokeback mountain was little more than mediocre. crash totally deserved it. i think people subconciously had A grades reserved for inland empire without even seeing it. i think giving so much praise to emily blunt in the devil wears prada is like giving praise to a great pianist who comes out and then repeatedly plunks one note on the piano. i think poor hilary swank is adorable. i still enjoy renee zellweger. michelle pfeiffer has never deserved an oscar (there have been times when she was the best of the nominees, though); julianne moore only deserves one. i didn't think dreamgirls was a hideous disappointment. i love clint eastwood's work. while i rarely think the oscars get it 100% (or even 50%, or 25%, or sometimes even 10%) right, they don't really embarass themselves all that often. i don't pat myself on the back for being off-consensus either.
however, i can relate to my fellow bloggers on one issue: sometimes, i'll feel, you know, blah. and then i'll put on a rufus wainwright song - "cigarettes and chocolate milk" is a for-the-time favorite - and i'll just feel better because the world allows for that kind of genius to exist.

Globes?
I can never decide whether I like the Globes or not. On one hand, they really do seem to vote what they like. On the other hand, they're basically starfuckers and will nominate those they love for either terrible work or work that is so obscure nobody else recognizes it (Kidman, Zellwegger, Johansson, Depp) rather than those who deserve it. Aaaanyway.

I haven't seen Miss Potter but I've heard Renee is comically bad in it. I actually loved her in Cold Mountain (don't kill me) but she was just...meh in Bridget 2, and they nominated her for that, so yeah...
WTF?: Collette. She's great in everything (including Sunshine), but let's face it, Breslin was better. Most people weren't picking Zellweger or Bening, either (I thought Zellweger would get in, but not Bening...but that might have been wishful thinking). I would have absolutely loved to see O'Hara here, or even Dunst or Johansson (was I the only one that liked her in Scoop? And the Globes did nominate her for Bobby Long...).
