I'm watching Kill Bill, Vol. II right now and it never really struck me before, but for a director that's such a genius with sound effects and music, this movie is really, really quiet a good amount of the time. And it totally works. Ugh Quentin baby, I love you.

Yeah, Quentin Tarantino is one of the most annoying people ever put on planet Earth. But you know what? He's also one of the most talented directors ever put on planet Earth, so it sort of balances out. Whatever you want to say about him, you can't deny that he has the ability to take tons of shit from other things and make them truly his own. Pulp Fiction is the best movie ever with the best screenplay ever. I do not exaggerate that statement. Plus, he's the only one who knows what the fuck to do with Uma Thurman (see the picture above, which still cracks me up. Uh, Quentin, her face is up there.). My ranking of his movies:

1. Pulp Fiction (A+, and my favorite movie ever.)
2. Kill Bill (A+ together, an A for both volumes)

2004

2004 was a great year. It gave us unquestionably the best film of the new millennium, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (it's not my favorite film of the new millennium...but it's up there). In fact, that film might just be the best picture of the entire 99-06 period. If not, it's up there with American Beauty, Lost in Translation, the Kill Bill opus, and the other masterpieces this time period has offered.

* Yes, Kinsey. Probably the most underrated film of the entire new millennium. It's flawlessly acted, very funny and smart, and I dunno. Most biopics, even those with greater acclaim from this very year (I'm looking at you Ray and Finding Neverland!), weren't interesting. This one was. Maybe the subject matter helped? I dunno. All I know is I think it's a great movie, and probably the best biopic that's the typical big, sprawling, someone's-entire-life-in-two-and-a-half-hours, Oscarbait type (as opposed to Raging Bull, Amadeus, and Marie-Antoinette, more slice-of-life biopics).

2003

figure i might as well get the "bad" years out of the way...but i don't actually think 2003 was that bad (only the third-worst of the new millennium, after 2000 and 2005). also note, i am including the hbo miniseries angels in america, the single best film in the time frame 99-06. also, 2003 had the godly lost in translation as well as mystic river, which still blows me away (shut it), and the first half of quentin tarantino's kill bill masterpiece.
