a BRILLIANT day for birthdays
i love the lovely laura linney (she's actually my second favorite actress). if you don't...what's wrong with you?!?! she has literally never been bad, even in crap like the life of david gale. check out the truman show, you can count on me (!!), mystic river, love actually, p.s., kinsey, or the squid and the whale, to name the most notable performances, for more brilliance. and yes, i liked her in mystic river...you got a problem with that? i cannot wait for jindabyne, the savages, and the nanny diaries (laura + scarlett!!!!! ...and alicia keys who i hate.)
CHRISTOPHER GUEST. please ignore for your consideration and watch waiting for guffman (one of the funniest movies ever) and best in show (also up there), among the many other brilliant movies he has contributed to: this is spinal tap, the princess bride...
you'd be very hard-pressed to find a director that is better at mixing what a majority of people want to see and his own artistic goals than michael mann. mostly every time out, i am shocked by how good his movies are. some seem to think miami vice is a masterpiece and modern antonini (?! usually these people have really pretentious taste.)... i don't, but it's worth a look anyway. as are, of course, heat, the insider, and collateral (just to name three great movies).
will someone please tell me why michael sheen looks like a serial killer in every picture of him on google image search? anyway, he's great in the queen (like, maybe better-than-mirren great) and i hope he gets lots more work in the future. he deserves better than blood diamond and kingdom of heaven and underworld, people!!
