Project Runway Episode 3

As ever, refer to Lifetime's website. :D

This was... kind of a serious hot mess of a week, design-wise. That said, the theme was wack, and the designers seem talented, and there were a few stand-out pieces, so I'm not willing to shriek "THEY HAVE NO TALENT!!!!!!! WORST RUNWAY SHOW EVER!!!! PR HAS JUMPED THE SHARK!!!!!!" like every commenter on both suck-ass TWoP and the awesome Project Rungay alike. Oh well.

Unfortunately, I wasn't paying that much attention to the show, so I forgot who was in charge of what outfits. I just remember Ra'mon did like everything for his group.

ALTHEA & LOUISE
Beachwear: That bust bothers me. I can't remember who made it, but I'll just assume Louise, cuz that looks like a bustline she would have worked on. Since the bathing suit seems separate it's even worse, because those cups would cover nothin'. And the waistline combined with the way the bottom of the dress balloons out makes the model look kind of dumpy. It's a gorgeous color, though, definitely beachy, and with a few tweaks it would be definitely wearable.
Avant-garde: I LOVE that bodice, and I like whatever is going on in the back. I think that's cool. That said, the design of the hemline is a fucking travesty (and the front is too short), and it really looks nothing like either their beachwear or anything avant-garde. Not that any of the others were really avant-garde, but I saw a few that tied into beachwear in a weird way.

CAROL HANNAH & SHIRIN
Beachwear: Something is really weird about the fit of the bathing suit, and it's a less fabulous version of one outfit Uli had in her finale collection, but I like it. It's cute, wearable, flattering, and the fabric is fabulous. And honestly, with the badness we saw this week, that's about all I can ask for.
Avant-garde: You know what? I like this. It's not really avant-garde, but none of them were. The blue petals are really kind of clunky (IIRC they moved nicely on the runway, though), and the rope is nice but cuts it off at a weird level. That's the end of my complaining, I swear! This is a great color and I love the subtle reminder of the waves. That brings it back to the beachwear idea, kinda. It may seem like I complained more than I complimented it, but I really do like the outfit.

CHRISTOPHER & LOGAN
Beachwear: It's really cute. Minus the heels, it looks beachwear-y for sure. The top and the bikini look great, and the hat was a good idea. The pants, the gold highlighting is not my taste, but I can see it working. That said, those pants are really unflattering and not made all that well... but at least he has something going here.
Avant-garde: I like it to an extent. My favorite thing about it is how it ties into beachwear with the wetsuit-like top. The lacing in the back is gorgeous, and you know the boys have skills when they can have that much stuff going on on the bottom and not make the dress look like HELLO, IT'S POOPING FABRIC (/Michael Kors). That said, the outfit is just....... dumb. I don't see avant-garde, I just see terrible. And IIRC, it moved poorly.

EPPERSON & QRISTYL
Beachwear: Believe it or not, I actually kind of like this. It's cute. It would be flattering on like three people in the world outside of the models of Project Runway, and it definitely relies on the pattern, but it's a cute dress that's fairly well-made. The silhouette was not the greatest idea in the world, but eh. They were definitely on the bottom for their avant-garde look (and the fact that they got along soooo badly), IMO.
Avant-garde: EEEK (though not as bad as the avant-garde in the next group...). It's got to do with the beach for sure, but... that's about it. It's a shitty, incredibly unflattering bathing suit in a shit-colored fabric, with some fabric haphazardly thrown on to give it the slightest hint of being avant-garde. Not good, guys.

GORDANA & NICHOLAS
Beachwear: I don't really like it. The pants are a nice idea, but they strike me as like... a lounge outfit, not a beach outfit. On the beach, all I can think is that they'd collect sand and get filthy in a few minutes. The croched top is nice and indeed beach-appropriate, but ugh, that stomach cutout is unflattering and what kind of hellish tan lines are you summoning with that shit?
Avant-garde: HORRIBLE. It would have been bad without the blue lace stuff on the legs, but it's truly, truly bad. How do you not think "cheap whore" looking at this? And what the hell does this have to do with either the beach or avant-garde fashion? I gave up on watching Models of the Runway, but I recognize this model and she is gorgeous and fabulous and deserves better.

IRINA & JOHNNY
Beachwear: Hate this model's styling. That said, I like the outfit. It's got the same cute, fun vibe as Mitchell's maternity outfit from last week, only it's way better made. The way the dress sort of falls off in the back is weird, but necessary to display the macrame, which I actually really like. What I don't like is how uneven the hem of that skirt looks (though it's a really cute skirt) and how the model looks pudgy in that top. But it's a pretty good look.
Avant-garde: It's the closest to avant-garde, and I liked it on the show, but the more I look at it now, the worse it becomes. It's really sloppily made. The hem and the braiding are really wonky. Sure, this reminds me of anything by Rami, but Rami would have died if his weaving was that weird. The back's a freakin' mess. It obliterates the model's shape and makes her look pudgy. I don't totally hate it, but yeah, it's not very good.

RA'MON & MITCHELL
Beachwear: It's nice but really, really basic. Like, rly. I like the subtle references to seaweed and waves, but it's just... okay. And while I think the dress needed a belt, and that's a nice belt, it's the wrong belt for this dress.
Avant-garde: It seems like everyone hates this and is having a fit over the fact that it won. But you know what? It's really not bad. It's definitely got a beachy vibe - IMO, the stain actually adds to that - and I like that it's sort of avant-garde with the weird material Ra'mon used. From the back, it looks truly sloppy, but didn't he put this shit together in an hour? It's far from perfect, but I'm impressed.
