I did see Inglorious Bastards. To compare it to Pulp Fiction or even Kill Bill is silly, but the movie was great. There were a few scenes where Tarantino could have cut away from the violence, which I think could have been more effective. It seemed even worse than his usual movies, violence-wise. Also, again, there were a few scenes where it was obvious Tarantino was trying to ramp up the tension via dialogue, which works very well in his films, but the scenes went on a few minutes too long. They started to strike me as Rachel Getting Married-esque, where the director/editor/whoever seemed way too in love with every single moment of the movie to cut any of it.
That said, it was a really well done movie, and I love the way it was kind of... a Western turned into a WWII story. The gallows humor was pretty glorious. The opening scene was just frigging incredible, along with the end of the movie. Christoph Waltz NEEDS an Oscar nomination and maybe even a win. Brad Pitt was a hoot. Whoever played Shoshanna is, I am not kidding, possibly the most gorgeous human being on the planet. Also, HAHAHA RYAN THE TEMP HAHAHAHAHA. B+
It turns out my dad saw the movie too, and really hated it. He had this huge rant against it, including circa-2003 blathering about how UNGRATEFUL the French are and how they should just kiss America's feet all the time, and ending in "AND HITLER DIDN'T EVEN DIE IN A MOVIE THEATER!!!!" Yes, dad, thank you for that brilliant insight. Wow... that sounded harsh. :(
As for District 9, after totally leaving the movie theater and paying for another, separate ticket to go see the movie, of course, *ahem* I walked in twenty minutes into the film (which I HATE) and the theater was completely freezing. The way the South Africans were treating the aliens - well, I expected it, based on what I heard about the film, but it really upset me. And when the guy who got sprayed with the alien liquid started puking and having black blood drip out of his nose and his fingernails fall off, I just walked out.
Let me just say that it was definitely not a bad film, from what I saw. It was extremely well-made and I do want to see it... but I'll just wait for the DVD.
